7 Simple Steps to Design a Creative Space at Home

I love my creative space.

There is nowhere I feel more inspired than in my permanently semi-messy space where there are paint splatters on the wall and my computer can blast music. I didn't alway have a full studio space with a packaging station or a place to just leave my canvasses to dry, but even when I didn't there was a drawer or a corner that was my creative space.

Here are my favorite ways that have worked for me to set up a workspace.

Why is a creative corner important?

Having a dedicated space for your artistic practice can motivate and inspire your creativity AND productivity. It provides a sweet spot where you can fully immerse yourself in your craft and let your imagination run wild. Whether you're a seasoned artist or just starting out, setting up a creative corner is a game-changer.

Step 1: Find the perfect location

The first step in setting up your creative corner is finding the location. I've always lived in homes without lots of extra space until I moved to Nova Scotia. But even in our downtown apartment in Amsterdam, The Netherlands I was able to grab a corner. A very tiny little corner, but a corner nonetheless!

If you do have an option, maybe look for a quiet and well-lit area where you can work without distractions.

The key is to choose a space that has natural light and is away from the main flow of the house.

Step 2: Gather your essential supplies

Next, gather all the supplies you'll need for your creative corner. This may include paints, brushes, canvases, sketchbooks, and any other tools specific to your artistic medium. Having everything within arm's reach will save you time and keep you focused on your work.

For me that's a big screened desktop computer to do my design work on and my various printers for shipping labels, A3 high-res print printer, photo printer and every day black and white printer. But also all the non-tech things like shipping supplies and my standing painting desk.

Step 3: Set up your workspace

Now it's time to set up the workspace. I'd start by thinking of function and organizing your supplies in a way that makes sense to the different 'jobs' you think you'll have in there.

Maybe you're a seamstress or upholsterer and you'd need space for your ever growing stash of fabrics (yes, I see you there, always in dire need of another yard!) and your sewing machine and space to lay out piece.

Or maybe like me you paint canvases but you also draw patterns. Those are distinctly different functions and different messes you're creating and you might want to have a cart for your paints and water pots and then a seperate work station where you are stationery and have your pencils lined up.

Consider using storage containers, shelves, or a pegboard to keep everything neat and easily accessible. And always arrange your materials in a visually pleasing manner to create an inviting atmosphere - we're artsy people after all and our environment matters!

Step 4: Personalize your creative corner

Add a personal touch to your creative corner to make it truly yours. Hang up artwork that inspires you or display sentimental objects that hold special meaning. Surrounding yourself with things you love will fuel your creativity and make your space feel more inviting.

To avoid taking on another artist's style too much I wouldn't surround yourself with those pieces that you think you'd draw too much from.

Step 5: Create a comfortable environment

Lastly, make sure your creative corner is a comfortable place to work. Invest in a comfortable chair that supports good posture and consider adding a cozy rug or cushions to make the space feel cozy. A comfortable environment will allow you to focus on your art for longer periods without discomfort.

Interior Design FAQ

Q: How can I make my creative corner visually appealing?

A: Incorporate elements of color and texture into your space. Consider painting the walls a soothing color that works well with the pieces you're going to be creating. Or adding decorative elements like plants or artwork. Experiment with different lighting options to create the perfect ambiance.

Q: What advice do famous painters have about studio space?

A: As the renowned painter Vincent van Gogh once said, "I dream my painting and then I paint my dream."

Your studio space should reflect your dreams and aspirations as an artist. It should be a place where you can fully express yourself and let your creativity soar.

By following these ideas that have worked for me in the past, I think you'll be on your way to creating your perfect creative corner.

Happy creating!
